TEMPLETON/WORCESTER — The man charged in the 2013 death at the Templeton Development Center is set to have a hearing to determine his mental competency.

Anthony Remillard, 23, is facing trial in Worcester Superior Court after being indicted in September on one count of manslaughter, one count of assault and battery on a person over the age of 60 or disabled resulting in serious bodily injury, and one count of assault and battery on a public employee.

Mr. Remillard was scheduled for the competency hearing earlier this year, but the dates were set back as both the commonwealth and defense gathered information heading into the hearing.

The new date for the competency hearing is July 15 in Worcester Superior Court, according to court records. The commonwealth was recently approved access to Mr. Remillard’s records at the Worcester Recovery Center.

Mr. Remillard had been assigned to the developmental center after being arraigned on 2012 charges of arson of a dwelling and breaking and entering in the daytime with the intent to commit a felony. That case went to the grand jury and resulted in indictments. A trial on those charges is still pending in Worcester Superior Court.

At his arraignment on the arson and breaking and entering charges, attorneys recommended that Mr. Remillard undergo an evaluation at Bridgewater or Worcester state hospitals. The recommendation was rejected and Mr. Remillard was instead allowed to enter a pretrial release commitment at the developmental center.

If found incompetent to stand trial, Mr. Remillard would likely be ordered held at a mental health facility for long-term treatment. He is currently being held in jail without bail.

On Sept. 16, 2013, Mr. Remillard reportedly shoved Dennis Perry, 64, of 46 Pheasant Lane in Athol, against a boiler at the Valley Barn located at the center, according to a state police detective’s report.

Mr. Perry was mentally disabled and lived at the developmental center for many years, according to reports.

The assault reportedly occurred in the presence of two staff members working at the center, who told police the attack on Mr. Perry was unprovoked. Mr. Perry died on Sept. 27 at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

A warrant was issued a few weeks later for Mr. Remillard’s arrest “due to the seriousness of the crimes and the victim’s death,” according to the state police detective’s report.

  1. The clients who are at the Templeton Developmental Center are much different than the kind of clients they had in the past. Many of these people are pedophiles, some have low IQ's. People with a iq under 70 can not be put in jail, so the powers that be, decided to place these people in Templeton. This is the reason we could not put a school in that area, and why these people are not in a regular group home.

  2. These people could not be tried for the crimes they committed? What thr crimes were in unknown. Do the people that care for them or the local police force know? They are not registered offenders either.
Careful when the Ferncol school wants to give Templeton anything. When we look into whats there we may not want any of it including the people who are walking distance from us if they get loose as they have in the past.
