The District
Economic Development Meeting will bring together local and regional
planning officials, municipal leaders, tourism, business and economic
development project leaders for a dialogue about our shared goals for
district-wide economic development, housing, and transportation.
Light
refreshments will be served. If you have any questions or to confirm your

I
believe this invitation was extended to the BOS and Town Coordinator. I won’t
be able to attend. Our Town Coordinator, Jeff Ritter will be in attendance.
This economic development tour might be a good opportunity for local business
people to talk to Congressman McGovern and
Representative Denise Andrews.

ReplyDeleteI doubt I have "shared goals" with Rep. Andrews. Anyway, I have to work. Maybe someone can ask her how raising the taxes of people in her district to pay for mass transit in metropolitan Boston is a good idea. We'll be lucky to see 5 cents on the dollar returned in chapter 90 money.

ReplyDeleteThey're planning to collect $500 million in new revenue, of which they'll return $200-$300 million in Chapter 90 funding.
ReplyDeleteWe're playing a losing game. Sending money to Boston never results in any multiplication in "our" favor.

Mark, I agree with you about the Chapter 90 funds.
ReplyDeleteMaybe McGovern will explain the reasoning behind why Congress voted to lay off Federal Law Enforcement Officers because the Government was broke, but then turned around voted to send millions of dollars overseas. The safety of the general public is not a priority for any seated member of Congress.
The only thing we can do is push our people in office to do right by us. If we do not get money from the government, we can not fund things, like road repair by our self. Remember we are a town without money!! That is a reality. Our debts are more than a town of our size should have, thanks to GS forty year loans, and buying 252 Baldwinville Road with no funding!! The lemon has been squeezed for all it was worth, to get us through this past year. Thanks to our town coordinator, Mr.Ritter and Advisory Board, led by Will Spring, we are slowly climbing out of the deep hole we have been in. My daughter in law works for the IRS. She and the people who work with her, have to take time off, with no pay, because of the sequester. No one came out in good shape because people would rather play politics, instead of doing their jobs. Bev.
DeleteEconomic development needed in this area would be that which creates a cash inflow to the region. We don't produce oil, we need to buy gasoline. How do we pay for gasoline? By producing something that we can export to a larger market. Same with food or manufactured goods.
ReplyDeleteWe can't pay for food, fuel and manufactured goods "imports" to our area by selling each other trinkets or lunch or services. If the only outside money coming into the area is from government entitlement payments, we'll be economically depressed, as the area is now. The tour destinations tell me that Rep. Andrews and McGovern don't understand this fundamental economic fact.
I spent some time at the meeting Rep.Andrews and Jim McGovern had today in Templeton. It was good, met some new people from the Athol Orange area. The topic was about economic development, and part of that was supporting the small business people as well as trying to attract new businesses to the area. Well Mike,where did you think they should have gone?? Gail was very gracious in letting everyone meet there. It was not a long visit, just time for a quick cup of coffee, and off down the road. I know how hard it is to run a business in this economy. My husband and I have been doing it for many years, and I watched my sister Patty when she owned the farm stand. Gail has worked hard, has been successful and no one can take that away from her!! We have a lot of small businesses, and I hope one day we can draw a larger company to this town to give jobs and tax relief. Time will tell, but we still have to support the people who are here. My opinion, Bev.

DeleteThis is the most important board in town. The last board had no guide lines, and had no real idea of what they were supposed to do! Twice I watched Bubba walk in to the AV Meeting trying to get money to pay CS so she could take over after Mr. Ritter got railroaded. He tried twice to use emergency funds, and twice Mr. Spring, told him no!! It is interesting that their failure to do simple math, did not constitute a emergency!! With out Mr. Spring there, Bubba would have walked out of that room, with 9,000.00. Now you can maybe understand, how our books were so screwed up, and why we could not set the tax rate. Games were played, and there was no one to stop any of it. Not to worry, Mr. Spring has every thing under control! Thank goodness for a good guy! Bev.
