Some thoughts from Afghanistan

It is election time in Templeton once again and the blog is heating up, one more candidates night to go before the all important election. Please be sure to vote. First things first though, Thank you to the ladies (also town employees) at the Assessors Office for the package sent to me a short time ago. The solid chocolate easter bunny was a nice choice, especially for a choc o holic like myself. I did also bring a smile to my face as I opened the box. Now whom ever posted on here that being a selectmen is a thankless job surely did not know what they were talking about. Take time to speak with town employees, take time to stop and talk with town residents, especially when you see them at meetings and I am always shown why I like being a selectmen.
Even when speaking to someone who is on the other side of the political spectrum, as on election day when I am holding a sign for someone and he is holding a sign for another, a couple of former Marines talked about things, just things politics aside. We may not have agreed to agree on politics but we spoke civilly and we listened to each other cordially and then politely agreed we would be continuing to disagree. No, being a selectmen is not thankless, we just do not get paid for it (anymore ).
Now sometimes becoming a selectmen or any elected office for that matter means you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. This is because some people disagree with you, even if you were voted in with 100% of the vote, you will eventually make a statement, vote one way or the other, or just do something that someone will not like then the ball gets rolling and you have to take the heat. Sometimes I think it can also be what you did in the past or the little things that add up. Possibly a few big things and then it seems like you are on the radar forever. Take Virginia Wilder for example, elected out of a recall and a year later, she is very much still on the radar. So lets look back at history for a moment. Shortly after being elected, Virginia voted (forthwith) to fire the town attorney and rehire K&P, in the middle of the month no less. This move cost the taxpayers an extra 5 thousand dollars because they had to pay two law firms for one month. At the very least, the 3 selectmen could have waited and either done it at the end of the month or at least planned it a little better. So there is one questionable move by Ms. Wilder that cost taxpayers money. By itself, not a really really big deal, but of course there is more. Then Ms Wilder voted to fire Jeff Ritter, again in midterm (and within the law) of course this action led to a cost to the taxpayer (because Mr. Ritter had an employment contract unlike former coordinator Carol Skelton) and so a settlement was agreed to and voted on (conflict with town by-laws) then Ms. Wilder voted to bring back former coordinator Carol Skelton (her admitted dear friend, there is a word for hiring friends which escapes me at the moment) on top of this, Ms Wilder went before the Advisory board to ask for emergency funds for a salary account for Ms. Skelton. Ms Wilder also talked as if her being before the Advisory Board was a consensus move on behalf of the board of selectmen, it was not and as I was in attendance, I reminded the Advisory Board of this fact, Virginia Wilder was there on her own. As had been Bob Columbus trying the same thing, stating something that was untrue (is that considered fraud asking for money under false pretenses?) To top all of this off, there have been more than one person who has stated on this blog that Virginia Wilder lied to them leading up to the recall vote that got Ms. Wilder elected to office.
All of the above is documented with the exception of Virginia lieing, only those present know for sure and as an FYI, I included that in this piece to all who read this to show why some people may blog what they do about Virginia Wilder. I hope this demonstrates that sometimes people earn what others say about them and why sometimes it seems that certain people are constantly hounded of what they have done or not done. Actions speak volumns and perhaps Ms. Wilder is changing her ways but history has a way of reminding us of what has been done and of what to watch for in the future. I hope this piece gives all something to think about and it helps people to understand why the microscope may still be on Virginia Wilder, it could just be that a matter of trust is still in question because of her past actions. Some people may have not forgotten the picture of Ms. Wilder at a selectmen meeting at the cafeteria at NRHS where she was seen telling police officers to "throw that whole section over there out of the meeting"

Please stay safe Templeton;
Jeffrey Bennett

  1. Jeff,
I think this is the word you were looking for.

    nepotism (ˈnɛpəˌtɪzəm)

    — n
Favouritism shown to relatives or close friends by those with power or influence

Stay safe in the sandbox Jeff. Thanks for serving.

    1. A selectman needs to be able to think for their self. They need to be independent, and able to see the big picture. If a selectman is doing the job with orders coming from the outside, it throws away all the good a person has accomplished. Running from every meeting, to report to the real boss, undermines any trust anyone could have for this selectman. I heard a report of a selectman complaining about people putting political signs on the town commons. It also bothers this person that the signs are near the off ramps of Rt.2. So I ask, what is the big deal? They will not stay there. Rt.2 is state land. Make it illegal and there goes the signs for Red Apple farm and other small businesses in town. I got to thinking, maybe the real problem is, the friend does not have the large number of signs, everyone else has!!!You think!! Being abusive is the very worst a selectman can do. Being a selectman does not give anyone a right to run rough shod over the people who work for the town. I guess, some people can not handle the position, or maybe they think because they are a "BOSS" it is ok. I can read this selectman like a book. When this person goes after, say the Highway boss, say for sanding too often, or after Jeff Ritter, for something he knows nothing about, the nasty edge shows, and it is not nice. Because of these things, no I have no trust in a selectman who's reason for being is to do another's bidding. At any other time, in another space, could we be friends?? Maybe, but I think I would sit with my back to the wall, just incase. To run for a job of selectman, can be difficult, but if you do your best and work for the good of the people of the town, they will cut you a lot of slack, even if you vote the way they don't think you should. Run for other reasons, and they will not forget. My opinion, Bev.

    3. Anon 251AM, Speaking of integrity being flawed, your drunk/high blogging is not as wicked smaht as you may think. Remember, it is your own fault that you lost a job you were unqualified to do.

  2. Well said Beverly! Some (VW) Selectman thinks she is above everyone and can do what she pleases. Well, it doesn't please this citizen.

  3. In an effort to be fair, there was a meeting at the Back Bay project yesterday. If Mrs. Wilder was seen over there, then it was for a valid reason. Now, I do not approve of her "forthwith" actions and her role in the Carol Skelton rehiring fiasco. But, I do have to say that she does take her role as selectman seriously compared to someone who ran for selectman just to "take up space" and then did not lift a finger except to second motions as directed by others who do not attend the meetings. To me, that is unacceptable and an example of the worst selectman. Mrs. WIlder has made an effort to attend other town committee and board meetings and that is a positive act. I cannot make assumptions whether her actions at said meetings were in the best interest of the whole town or in the best interest of her select circle of friends. But, an active selectman with a known bias is better than an inactive selectman taking up space to create a majority vote and to deliberately block progress. Lets make sure that the new selectmen we vote into office are people who have dedication to the position and are working for the best interest of the whole town, and do not take orders from outside influences. New people with new perspective and experience is vital for Templeton to continue its upward climb back to stability.

    2. Anonymous 12:oo, I will give this selectman credit for the things she does that are good, as a part of the job. It is when marching orders are give, or other agendas get in the way, all the good goes out the window. It is like the sky goes from blue to black, and the change is just to dam obvious to ignore. It is too bad this happens, because she puts in the time, and it would behove her to leave her personnel feelings behind. Do you think anyone will ever forget her ordering half the room to be thrown out, of a public meeting?? Most of those people were just sitting there, not doing anything wrong. Myself I consider that abuse of power. This is just my opinion, Bev.

    3. Yes Bev, you are absolutely correct!! This is one of those times where less said was not enough to get my full point across. I was in total agreement with the concept of the "empty" chair on the BOS, not on any of the issues regarding VW. She seems to be a very unpredictable person, although I do not know her personally. However, judging by her abusive disrespectful behavior at some of the meetings & the incident where she gave marching orders on those she is supposed to be representing, she is not deserving of that position. This is my opinion from observing her very unprofessional manner. I agree that that was a major abuse of power. If I had to choose maybe I would pick the silent one after all, though neither should be sitting on the board with either mode of behavior. That is my further view of this situation. That's why discussing these events thoroughly with different viewpoints adds so much more to issues or to the scrutiny of our public officials. It is very important to keep vigilant on everyone so they stay working for us & not themselves. Thanks Bev, Jeff & Tom J for prompting me to look at this blog again to clarify my thoughts. Have a good evening all.

  4. I did write that blog as an informational piece to try to explain why so much negativity towards Virginia Wilder on this blog. Yes Virginia is the one out of the two selectmen voted in by recallwho does volunteer for committees and attend other meetings. As one blog pointed out and I used it: "damned if you do and damned if you don't"

  5. I happen to agree with Jeff regarding his comments about Mrs. Wilder's methods. She also lied to me when running for election.
She is also the one who publicly proclaimed that she does not know anything about running the water and light department and therefore should not be saddled (as a selectman) with taking over the duties of the water and light commission.
So now she authors a citizen's petition to change the regulations of the sewer department. Somehow she has magically become an expert on all things about sewer operations. All this without ever consulting the commissioners or the staff or anyone else about the possible ramifications of this really stupid regulation change. Again she proposed the change that benefits exactly ONE person --Another dear friend of hers, without any regard whatsoever how this would affect the other rate payers or the town. "Just Sayin"

    1. Tom J...I agree with you & Jeff, as well. I do not endorse VW by any means but was merely agreeing with getting an active member as opposed to a lifeless presence put there as a token in order to cast a vote for those that they might owe favors to. These are my views as gleaned from watching the meetings & reading countless blogs. In my opinion, VW could use a course in how to present herself in a professional manner to her constituents. Being a selectman does not equate to being the entire town's "Boss". The exact opposite is true but often times is lost in the motives of self-serving individuals. I am not saying she is, as I do not know her, but as a general statement based on facts from observing her treatment of people at meetings. Tom, I enjoy your posts, as well. These are the respectful kinds of dialogues that help get info out without name calling but stating the facts as they are. All anyone has to do is watch the BOS meetings on the local channel to see what you & Jeff are saying is true. Abuse of power is a no-no that needs to be addressed. Thank you Jeff for calling certain ones out for it in a well thought out professional & respectful manner. All good Factual points! Always look forward to your blogs. Stay safe there in Afghanistan.

    2. It is something to think about, How do you think all those people got to the STM?? I am willing to bet, they were called and lied to again. Some of these people did not know where the selectmen were sitting!! One person was heard asking who VW was!! I am really sick of this crap going on. Tell the truth, let people vote on things for what they are!! Sooner or later the people in this town will smarten up and get sick of being conned, time after time. Lets hope the sooner is now, and we can get back to making things better for everyone with out wasting so much energy on this stuff. It is too bad people have short memories, or the Gsnoos never covered things with honesty. Lets hope the young lady who has the job now, is fair. I must say, I do miss you Mark!! Again my opinion, Bev.
