I've got blisters on my finger! Sorry, first thing that came to mind, as I forgot how to initiate a post, so I will hijack this one.
ReplyDeleteOMG people, get a life, all of you. It has, quite deliberately, been a while since I've chosen to speak out. So much to say, so little time.
NRSD - Fund it, fully fund it. Get over the fact you didn't like your 7th grade science teacher. You got a notion the teachers all make way too much money and do a crap job? Yes, there are a few that rightfully should not be there, but the rest do an outstanding job, especially given what they have to work with. Paid too much? Check out other towns, salaries for NRSD are pathetically low. Who is doing the crap job then? The parents are...well, not all but a lot are. It used to be if a kid got in trouble the parents would always side with the teacher, not so much any more, try supporting them. Don't celebrate the fact a 13 year old got herself pregnant. And certainly don't be publicly saying, 'awww, I was that age when I had my first". Teachers aren't paid to socialize your kids, that is the parent's job. Stop blaming the school because you kid entered puberty. Children have to get to school ready to learn and it is the parent's job to make sure they are. If you want to have your children have a better life than you do, they need a better education than you had. How many graduates of NRSD are National Merit Scholars? No idea what that is? Google it. You want people to move in and expand the tax base? Give them a reason to. Encourage the school system to ready students for full scholarships to BU or BC or Northeastern, or Brown, or Harvard. Again, what comes out of the school system is a function of what went in to it. Force your kids to do their homework. Making a child is about where the fun stops, until they leave home and have productive lives. Celebrate intellect, not carnal knowledge. In short, as a parent, do your job.
Politics - oh, where to start. Templeton politics are a tempest in a tea pot. And how did you transition from school budget vs taxes to fluoride in the drinking water. Salt is a poison, water is a poison. One can die from consuming too much of either of those. So yes, if you drink a gazillion gallons of fluoride you will likely die. In life, you get what you pay for, if you don't demand ethical selectmen, you surely won't get them. If you have one that breaks the public trust, they should be in jail, not padding the town paid positions with their relatives. Just as there may be a few teachers that shouldn't be employed, there are other town employees that shouldn't be employed either.
Police - WTF, why not give them a decent place to do their jobs from, rather than that shoe box you've stuffed them in. I've spoken to the Chief, a good guy who is trying to do the best he can with what you've given him to work with. You merely have to look at some other towns to see their police and fire have nice, adequately sized building from which to work in.
Ask yourself if people actually want to live in Templeton. Look at the price homes are selling for in Wichendon, Winchester, Gardner. We were there 11 years and lost money. The answer is no they don't. If for no other reason than you want your kids to be successful, given them an environment that will make them successful, good schools, well paid teacher (if you don't attract the best and brightest, them you will have a hard time getting them).

I disagree with you on a few points like funding NRSD fully. I work in education. in my opinion, there is no way to fully fund education…there will never be enough money in the universe to satisfy the educational/industrial complex. Working together for a compromise dollar figure is the best you can do. BTW, the use of nuclear option by the school department is not "working together" with the towns.
The days of full scholarships to college are long gone…no matter what school district your child attends. Kids lead complicated lives these days. Many are not "ready to learn" when they walk through a school door. I would not be too hard on the kids or their parents. Many people do not have the financial management skills they need to survive; many people are one paycheck away from insolvency. So it all comes back to money.
I disagree with you on fluoride. I have very expensive town water. I don't another option for water. The town voted to add fluoride to the water supply in 1951 by a town meeting vote. There is no way to "opt out" of water fluoridation. I am vehemently opposed to be being medicated (fluoride is an unapproved drug) without my consent - against my will. I will continue to work to get rat poison out of the water supply.
Public safety - all of our public safety employees deserve better. Better equipment, better facilities, better wages. Better costs $$$$.
