Enlightening...from Bev

Enlightening...from Bev

Last year I looked at what some of the other electric companies did for their communities. The facts at that time were for 2011, and they were on Shrewsbury's Electric & Cable Operations Web Site. I thought this was worth putting on the blog just so you know what other Light Companies will do.

$198,116 Direct cash payment in LIEU of taxes. SELCO is tax exempt. Light Commission votes annually to make a payment to the town.

$138,490 Estimated interest income from operating Cash and Depreciation funds.  SELCO elects to give interest income from depreciation fund to the town.

$423,742 Reduced Electric Rates for all Town Buildings when compared to neighboring investor owned electric companies.

$207,890 Reduced street lighting rates. SELCO charges the town for street lighting. These rates are below those charged by neighboring investor owned electric companies.

$87,600 Town Hall Additions for town wide use. SELCO paid for 1997 addition to town hall.

$223,848 SELCO labor used for other town departments.

In 2011, SELCO Electric's value to the town was $1,279,686.

  1. Bev from what you show us here it is oposite of the TMLWP goals.
This shows they "give" back to the town and TMLWP only "takes" back from the town.
I took a closer look at the chapter 164 section 47c. Municipal lighting plant cooperatives
(xii) To make donations for the public welfare or charitable, scientific,or educational purposes.

I see no reason our TMLWP funding the complete REC department would be a problem.
Unless they spent all the "Renewable Energy Credit" money they have recieved Asking what they spent it on would be a good thing for the town to do.
Please join the BOS and Light department meeting tonight as we need to hold all our elected official responsible for the decisions they make on our behalf.

    1. If Mr. Driscoll would spend as much energy working with the town as he does hiding the money they make, we would all be so much better off. The Light Company spends as much as they can, who else gets a new truck every five years? What other Water Superintendent makes over 100,000. a year ? Driscoll had the nerve to put the same report in the Annual Town Report, two years in a row, thinking no one would notice. He was not counting on Will. Spring, checking up on him !! Did the commissioners fire him ? Hell no !! I would have in a heart beat. Now it looks like our Commissioners are working for him. I thought that should have been the other way around ?? As I have watched the interaction between the Light and Water Manager and the people we elect as our Light Commissioners, I have seen less and less leadership on the part of our Commissioners. Mr. Driscoll has a big problem working with other departments, and has no respect for any of the people working for the town. This is not what any company needs from the person who is their General Manager. I went to the last Light Company meeting, and it was "in your face" disrespect for the people in this town, and it's leadership. Mr. Driscoll had no problem throwing the town under the bus, giving the town very little in this deal with KTec, so the Light Company could make more. Sorry, but the people in this town do not have to settle for less to make JD happy, and Julie and our Representative Denise Andrews were doing their jobs to watch out for the town. This is just another reason the people in our town need to understand this is" Not Your Father's Light Company !!" This is my opinion, Bev.

    2. Are you guys awake out there?? Doesn't the fact the Templeton Municipal Light has refused to give the town a hand when things have gotten so bad we have closed most of our town departments. People who have been loyal to you and me, have got the shaft, instead of some help !! These guys are sitting on some serious money, put aside incase we have another ice storm !! Seriously that is what they said at one point. Why is it that the Light Co. could help when Skelton was a selectman, but not now ? This is a town asset, don't forget that. When Driscoll can't run the business to make money and keep the rates comparable to National Grid, that will tell you a story. Why doesn't Princeston buy it's power from EMMWIC ?? These are things you need to watch carefully, and while you are at it, pray that wind turbine keeps spinning because when it stops there is no way we could afford to fix it. Why would anyone put a wind turbine in a hole? That is your Light Company working for ?? Bev.

  2. Forget what they give back and focus on what they don't take. for a 110.00 bill in Templeton it's only 80.00 for a Shrewsbury customer. It would make antone wonder why. Do our TMLWP managemant do things wrong? Are they out of touch and unable to see the things in front of them that need to change. Why do the Electric employees mow the water dept lawns?
That is a cost to the electric customers that should be a cost to the water customers and the way they mingle the labor between the departments is a poor way to manage them.
