So what's wrong with this picture? The voters at previous town meetings voted to create and fund full time equivalent firefighters to provide 'round the clock coverage for both EMS and fire services. The Fire/EMS department now provides ALS service the funds from which are used to support full time coverage.

The only way to keep the fire/EMS department at ALS level is that a paramedic fire chief needs to be in place.

From Jeff Bennett's blog
Massachusetts General Law, chapter 48

Section 58. In every town which accepted chapter two hundred and ninety-one of the General Acts of nineteen hundred and sixteen or chapter one hundred and forty of the General Acts of nineteen hundred and seventeen, or in which the provisions of chapter thirty-one were, on April third, nineteen hundred and seventeen, applicable to the chief of the fire department thereof, such chief shall hold his office continuously during good behavior unless incapacitated by physical or mental disability to perform the duties of his position; provided, that in every such city the official having the power of appointment, with the consent of the confirming board, if any, and in every such town, the selectmen, may, for just cause and for reasons specifically assigned by said official or selectmen, remove such chief, first giving him a copy of such reasons and allowing him a reasonable time to answer them in writing. A copy of the reasons, notice and answer, and of the order of removal, shall be filed with the town clerk.

  1. Hi Carol,

According to MGL chapter 48 section 58 😊

Is there a copy of the reasons, notice and answer, and of the order of removal of the Fire Chief on file with your office? If so, could I please have a copy of the reasons, notice and answer, and of the order of removal of the Fire Chief?

    Thank you for your help,

    Julie Farrell

  2. Somehow I do not think that "someone not liking" the Chief counts, or one of the new "Captains" pushing for his job, counts either. It takes someone special to lead. Some people are born with the ability but most do not have the ability. Once we loose EMS, we will not get it back. What about the money ?? This Town does not have enough to run with all that is needed in today's world. Are we going to get it from the "Light Co. ?? Does not look likely. Markel rolled over like a wet dog. A project from them ? Don't hold your breath. The income could come from E.M.S., or at least some of it. Now it will all come from YOU and ME. Looks like Echo Hills promise to "pay back the Town" is becoming a reality. Of course this is my opinion, based on fact.

  3. From what I here the cheif did it to himself laziness and ignoring the fire side of the department ! I know from my experience with him that it be very little I had very little respect for the guy ! I retired from the department just as he got on as cheif after 30 plus years they had a retirement party for a few of us that retired and you would think that the cheif of the department would show up. Not ! No use for a guy the don't respect retiring firefighters. Just my opinion

  4. chief la port is one of the best things that happened to this town in a long while. as a assessor we shared the office building in baldwinville. hard working and friendly are two words that work for me. trying to get the upgrade to the ambulance service would be great for the town. so he didn't show up at a retirement party for people he didn't know doesn't tell me anything. my opinion.
