The shortfall in the fiscal year 2013 budget is apparently very large, so do not look for any free cash from any audits. My opinion is it was foolish to even speak of any possible free cash or extra unallocated money before actually having it in hand. I still firmly believe there is either not enough money to run this Town and/or the money is not being applied in a correct smart fashion. When the audit is done, whenever that may be, then the dollar figure will be known. There is always the possibility that the deficit will turn out not to be as large as anticipated but again, that will remain an unknown until things are completed. One thing is for sure, belts better be tightened real soon.

It looks like the selectmen have their work cut out for them. I think each selectman should "volunteer" 1 day a week to cover the selectmen's office until a interim, interim town administrator can be located.The search for a full time town administrator will take a long time.
ReplyDeleteIf the financial news from the audit is that bad, it may be it is time to put a moratorium on capital projects. These capital projects are based on the return of the elusive once and future bond rating. If FY 13 is out of balance by a large sum, how much is FY 14, FY 15 and FY 16 off by? This could get really ugly really fast!
I remember a selectmen's meeting in the Kiva, after the school department robbed the town( NUCLEAR OPTION whereby the NRSD committee turned 4 NO Votes into a YES vote; trying to come up with a figure for an override for the TOWN budget.
Mr. Bennett suggested a million dollar override. Looks like the we should have taken his advice.
Might be time to consider contacting the State for help...as in an investigation!
Make that a motion and I will second it. This is sad news for the residents of out Town. Things should be getting better, but they have not. We, as a Town need to know where we stand economically before we make another move. Maybe our Administrator did not understand how difficult our situation was/is. Regardless all spending must come to a stop until we have a clear picture of how many alligators we have in the swamp, our how deep the hole we are in. Then we can drain the swamp and stop digging the hole bigger.
