Staff Report

TEMPLETON — Eighth grade students from across the state joined Governor Deval Patrick in Boston for a day on Jan. 18 through Project 351 — a community service initiative launched in 2001 by the governor.

“Our young people have unlimited potential to create positive change across our Commonwealth, our nation and our world,” Gov. Patrick said in a statement. “Project 351 recognizes that, while providing a wonderful opportunity to inspire, challenge and motivate our next generation of leaders to give back and make a significant impact.”

Project 351 is an independent non profit organization which seeks to engage community members by promoting kindness, compassion, commitment, humility and generosity.

Students were nominated by their superintendent and chosen based on their involvement in community service throughout the year. Over 400 students participated in the event, which included a Town Meeting and work with nonprofit groups around the state capital.

Narragansett Middle School students Owen Robichaud, of Templeton, and Lily Anderson, of Phillipston, were nominated and sent to the event as area ambassadors. Lily has been active in her Girl Scout troop for years, participating in many community service events around town. She is also a Peer Pal at the middle school and is involved in soccer, yearbook, and drama.

“Being apart of this project is going to be really cool,” Lily said. “I’m excited to meet new people and make a difference in our state on a bigger level.”

The project partners with Highland Street Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield Massachusetts, the New England Patriots Charitable Fund, John Hancock, Pfitzer, AT&T and Bank of America.
