On the bright side! A new business in town‏

After years of proving the people of Leominster, and the surrounding area, with top quality vegetable plants and flowers, Bart's Farm closed up shop and relocated to Templeton. I am more that happy to say, Bart has down sized, from 6 large green houses to 1. I had been on the verge of rebelling for a number of years, because I wanted to go home. It became a standing joke with the regular customers, "Oh, you are still here!" This time I am happy to say I am home, and the people who are used to doing business with Bart, have
come here, to get the plants they need. Bart has been a grower for the past thirty five years. His ability to grow healthy, insect and disease free plants, has gained him a loyal following. Bart told me he was going to put up one greenhouse. When I looked out the door, I was not surprised to see a 100 foot greenhouse. He needs the space because he plants a good variety of tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Bart plants what you will not find in most places. We have kale, endive, broccoli, brussels sprouts and swiss chard and lettuce. We carry squash, summer and zucchini, plus some winter squash. It is very important to buy your plants from people you know. Disease can come to your garden through the seeds you use, and from the plants you buy. Once disease is in the ground, you can't get rid of it. Four or five years ago Home Depot, sold tomato plants with phytophthora. They were grown in Florida and distributed by a guy from Alabama. They carried the same disease that caused the potato famine in Ireland. The spores were carried on the wind, so if you had a good garden, and your neighbor had sick plants, and the wind carried the spores your way, your garden was gone in a flash. There was no way to stop it. This year impatients have a huge problem. They have picked up a downy mildew. We had planted huge assortment of these plants, and people could buy trays of the same colors, to plant in their yards. I lost my plants at camp, in just two days, and there was nothing that I could do. We did not plant any impatients at all this year. I would not sell any plants that were not going to last, but some growers, grew them anyway! Bart has grown the flowers I plant in front of Gladys's stone in the Common. They are Dreamland Zinnias. We have a nice assortment of flowers to go along with the vegetable plants we have. We are at 686 South Road, Templeton. Open from 9:00 until 7:00 every day. Hope to see you soon, Bev.

    1. Bart is giving every customer who buys something, a choice of a six pack of, lettuce, kale or escarole, for free. This goes until we run out. Things are going well. Sedona is in her glory, making new friends, adding to her fan club. She is my dog, who has a fan club from Melrose to Waltham including Leominster. Some of our people from Leominster, think they will fall off the globe, if they go West on Rt.2. Bev.
