Republican Leader Holds up Funds for Templeton Senior Center

Republican Leader Holds up Funds for Templeton Senior Center

Rep. Andrews Calls on Republican Party to End Stalemate

(TEMPLETON) – State Representative Denise Andrews today called upon House Republican Minority Leader Brad Jones, (State House - 617-722-2100) head of the House Republican Caucus to stop playing politics with the people of her district and end his party's opposition to a late year spending bill that includes funds needed to complete the new Templeton Senior Center. The bill mainly addresses deficiencies in some accounts, including one-time spending for various initiatives.

“The Templeton Senior Center project is vital to the town of Templeton and area seniors,” shared State Representative Denise Andrews (D-Orange). “The Friends of the Council on Aging and volunteers have worked for years, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the project. They were asking only for a bit of help from the state to complete construction. Last week, Rep. Gobi and myself reached out to House Chairman of Ways and Means Brian Dempsey, advocating for the earmark’s inclusion and highlighting the work to date. Now, at the last minute, the Republican leadership in the House is holding everything up (District Office 978-664-5936)

to make a point. They don’t like earmarks. After reviewing the many bond bills passed earlier this year and past budgets, it’s clear these same people weren’t against earmarks for projects in their own districts. There is a real fear that the furnace in the current Senior Center will not make it through the winter. If that happens, where will Templeton seniors go?”

The State House News Service reported earlier in the day Thursday that House Republican leaders are threatening to block an $80 million supplemental budget bill before a Thursday deadline to close the books on the fiscal 2014 budget over his opposition to $1.3M in earmarks.

Funding for the senior center project was included in the Senate version of the bill by Ways and Means Chairman Stephen Brewer (D-Barre), came as the result of outreach by the Templeton Council on Aging, who hosted the delegation recently at the new site to highlight construction progress and unmet needs. Rep. Andrews shared that she and delegation have worked for months to include the request for assistance in a spending bill.

  1. Isn't it just ducky that these people can play games for no good reason that I can see, just because it is not in their back yard !! This town has gone through enough upset, and it would be a godsend to have the Senior Center done for once and for all. It is up to Sen. Brewer to bend a few arms, as the people in this town have supported him for a good long time. Denise is working hard to get these guys to move, after all, some of our elderly are Republicans and have worked hard their whole life, so they deserve a nice Senior Center, no matter what party the belong to. We may be in for a rough ride as some people at the state level are trying to dump the responsibility for the Templeton Developmental Center on our Town of Templeton. Oh yes, with not a lot of notice, try a couple of weeks !! They have no security employed by them so they are going to depend on our police force, as they do not have enough to do. Our police are short handed 24/7, so where are you going to get a army when you need one? As for the roads, Bud just told them NO !! Good for him, he has enough trouble keeping our roads clean with the patched up junk the highway guys use for equipment. I had a tour of the TDC with Denise Andrews last week and saw the poor excuse they have for a sewer system, and water system. Believe it or not, both systems are junk, as they have not put a penny into them for a good long time. So the bright idea is to fill the sewer pipes with cement, shut everything down and walk away. The plan is to abandon some of the big buildings, but not tear them down, just leave them standing. Ms. Andrews told the people in charge not to fill the sewer pipes with cement. It does not seem like they have a plan that makes any sense at all, and it is beyond me why the let all of the systems go to hell. If they think that they can hold all of that land hostage for forty clients, they may have another thing coming. We need Ms. Andrews to stand up for our town, just like she has for the past four years, because if she does not fight for us who is going to really care. This problem with the Developmental Center could be one of the biggest problems this town will face if we do not have enough support in Boston. The town simply can not afford to take on the D.C's problems with out the funds to back us up. I know we can depend on Julie and Rep. Andrews to watch out for us, as they are involved and will not let the big shots push us around. I will keep everyone posted as things move along. By the way, Happy Halloween !! Bev.

    1. I looked at this guy's website, and he was making a issue about Denise running for re-election. So I sent him a very nice email. I let him know we are a town that came extremely close to being bankrupt, and that is not something we are proud of. I told him we had no big industry to help the people in this town pay the way. I let him know the people in town had done much to get the Senior Center where it is today, but we could help getting it finished. I let him know Denise was doing what she always does, she was working for us when she asked for help with funding. She was working for us, that is her job. If anything I hope he sees himself as I do, a mean self centered man. Bev.
