Red Rover, Red Rover,
Send DOVER Right Over!
In the Town Administrator's report at the Selectmen's meeting March 28th, some interesting news was reported regarding the Elementary school.
Town counsel was contacted and has reviewed the Dover Amendment as it applies to Templeton's Zoning bylaws and the height of the elementary school. It appears the hearing with the Zoning Board of Appeals regarding the variance for the height requirement for the new school will be unnecessary. Because your input and our zoning bylaws don't really matter.
Funny how Town Counsel was asked to review the Dover Amendment in regard to the elementary school and yet Town Counsel did not review the $50 million dollar contract to build the school.
We live in interesting times!
Toward the end of the selectman's meeting, there was some discussion about naming the Elementary School. One suggestion was to name it the Narragansett Elementary School. Kate Fulton, a member of the Advisory Board, would like to see the Elementary school named after Stephen Hemman.
Please contact the Selectman's Office with any and all name suggestions for the Elementary school. Public input is encouraged.
So we will wipe any trace of Templeton Center School away...and name the new school the Narragansett Elementary School ??? What do you think of that ?? Maybe the Selectmen will just wipe Templeton Common away and make it a big parking lot. That is what it will take to provide parking for the people working at this new school. If you have any other ideas for what this "big screw up" should be named, you had better act fast. Ms.Fulton has good intentions, but Mr. Hemmen is the last person who should have his name on anything. He is paid very well to do his job. He does not pay a cent in taxes to this town, and will be gone as fast as he can, once his time is up. But of course this is my opinion. The selectmen sit up front, and I wonder if they have a clue how many people are unhappy with the new school going in Templeton Center ??
ReplyDeleteWhat a total loss of livable space. There could be dozens of appartments like the heywood blds. have provided. Why not convert to low and disabled housing?
ReplyDeleteJust like the old school Bld in Baldwinville this could be a federal use for money to get this to a usable property again with no cost to tear it down.
The Dover Amendment (state statute) provides that school projects in Massachusetts are exempt from local zoning regulations under most circumstances. I was asked to consult Town Counsel to determine whether the Building Inspector or the Zoning Board is the proper entity to determine if the Dover Amendment is applicable. The design for the school provides for a height that exceeds the zoning requirement by approximately 1.5 feet; if the Dover Amendment applies, the school building may exceed the zoning regulation.
ReplyDeleteIt has been determined that the proper entity to make the decision is the Zoning Board of Appeals. The ZBA has scheduled an open public hearing for April 26.
Thank you Mr. Markel for this information.
