Storms Today

Another severe weather day is expected on Tuesday.  This will result in two separate rounds of showers and thunderstorms.

Round 1:
Timing:  Roughly from 7 AM - 1 PM
What we know:
Expect widespread rain with embedded heavier showers and thunderstorms
Highest likelihood is over NW MA and N CT
Greatest threats are heavy rain and localized flooding, followed by gusty winds and frequent lightning
There is potential for rotating storms that will need to be watched for damaging wind, possibly even a brief spin-up, should thunderstorms develop within the widespread rain

What we don't know:
How much thunderstorm activity there will be with limited instability during the morning hours
When we will know more:

Additional information may be available with later model runs tonight, however, much of the uncertainty is in small scale details that may not become clear until Tuesday morning

Round 2:

Timing:  Roughly from 3 PM - 9 PM
What we know:
Highest likelihood is west of the Connecticut River valley
Strong to severe thunderstorms develop over PA and S NY and move towards southern New England
Conditions for thunderstorms are least favorable to the SE, namely over the Cape and Islands

What we don't know:
If there will be enough instability to maintain storms eastward across southern New England to locations such as Central and NE MA and CT, including N RI.
