Again...Historical Look Of Templeton Center

Historical Look Of Templeton Center

What is the criteria for determining "the historical character" of Templeton Center?

In a Gardner News article (8/30/16) regarding the construction of the police station in Templeton Center, Chief Bennett stated:

"Bennett said the exterior design will closely resemble an Old New England church or school building. He said he chose this design intentionally so it would fit within the historical look of other nearby buildings situated around Templeton common"

The design of the New Police Station does seem to fit the historical nature of Templeton Center. It does not overwhelm the properties next to it...unlike the elementary school project.

What is the future of the historical character of Templeton Center?

  1. Truly, what is the point of making the Police station fit the community when right next door will ruin it?

We should not be spending additional money to maintain the historic nature of Templeton center if we are building a 93,000 sq ft behemoth next door. What would be the point.

  3. Sometimes in your life you have to do the right thing even if it means saying no to the school system that intends to ruin your neighborhood with a school that is to big for the postage size lot it will inhabit. The Planning Board should stick to their guns and vote no with the intention of recalling the Board of Selectmen if they should decide on a lawsuit against the Planning Board. This is a bad location according to just about everyone involved and the people leading the project to greener pastures should be the Board of Selectmen.

  6. Dear huff and puff the location is wrong for this size school it appears that this location was chosen mostly because it could not be legally challenged not because it makes a good location for the future generations in Templeton.

  7. This whole school issue just PROVES that the folks that want the school the most DO NOT GIVE 1 HOOT about the Town of Templeton

  8. People just dont stop and think. In MA the average cost per pupil is $16.430 which in a 180 day school year, 6 hrs a day (1080 hrs) means we are spending $15.21 per pupil hour on education. 30 kids per class and we are paying $460 an hour for class time, really?
These same people so worried about "the children" saying they cannot learn in an old school.....lol are fine with borrowing our limit without outside approval ( I forget the agency). This for an Elementary school. Why isn't Phillipston require to pay part of loan??? So what happens in the next few years? Whats the plan? If we are exhausting our borrowing limit on one facility while we sit with a $1,000,000 shortfall from 4 yrs ago (fiscal) and no clue as to the 2014,15,16 audit.....hmmmm
Seems we already cannot borrow for the water tower, but hey, lets spend more..............arghhhh!!

  1. Perhaps members of the Planning Board should consider contacting their State Representative Suzanne Whipps Lee, as Mr. Columbus is head of the town Democratic Committee it is doubtful Representative Gobi will be of assistance. Often times State Reps. have ideas that help towns like Templeton make better decisions. Just a thought.

  2. Planning board members are scared to death of the safety issues with the school plans as the area will be congested to the point where kids no longer can be protected. To take the land from the police for parking just shows how small the area is. Are the department heads working for the school building committee or the towns well being.
    MONEY? MONEY? MONEY?
Can't buy a tank how will we buy a school?

  3. I'm curious if its LEGAL to have 2 properties sharing drainage/parking as part of the building permits. I sure know it would absolutely not be allowed for 2 neighbors building houses. Who pays if something goes wrong?, A child falls in a sink hole, do the parents Sue the school, the police dept. or the folks that are demanding this monstrosity. I guess the high paid Lawyers will have the answers, OR OPINIONS.

  5. Puffer, It has to be done according to rules regulations safety etc. Just because 300 people in town want it does not mean it can be done without any regard to town laws. Bravo to the planning board members who care.

  7. One thing that can be asked is do the people wish to rescind the past school vote of November 2015. Safety and parking is a planning board issue, look at past requirements for cubbies in east templeton.

  8. That would be cumbies, as in Cumberland farms

  9. Jeff, It's pretty obvious parking is an issue from the start as they already plan on using the back of the police station. That by itself says the "new" space for the school is insufficient/unsafe.

How would school being released with expected traffic affect the response of the police?

  10. It would be nice to see some leadership from our Board of Selectmen on this issue. To me the better location would be to build on or adjacent to our current High School Middle School. The Otter River School property was also the location of a past school so perhaps legally this spot also could not be challenged. Does the Board of Selectmen have an opinion on this poor location or are they content to let the Planning Board take all the heat. If the Board of Selectmen get our State Legislators involved perhaps there is a solution to this problem.

  13. Dear huff and puff because your comments are no longer there I will have to infer that "it is the law" is your comment. I have found that the law is a very changeable depending on who is involved and how much money is at stake. By contacting our State Representatives perhaps we can put on hold any money dedicated to this project until a better location is found. It is my opinion that if polled many Templeton residents would find our current High School Middle School a better location than the Elephant in the living room that has been presented. It would seem our Board of Selectmen would be the ones to take the lead if this path is to be considered.

  14. I THINK IT BOILS DOWN TO A MATTER OF "PUBLIC" SAFETY!
ANY DELAY FOR A 911 RESPONSE IS A NON STARTER.
WITH THE ONE WAY CHANGE IT LEAVES ONLY ONE PATH/LANE TO GET OUT OF TEMPLETON CENTER.
