A Shocking Surprise!

A Shocking Surprise!

Toward the end of the selectmen meeting last night, shocking news was delivered regarding the budget for FY 18.

The estimated increase for the NRSD budget for FY 18 was projected at $380,000. The figure of $380,000 was factored into the preliminary budget figure for the town.

BTW, the increase in local revenue (2.5 %) for FY 18 is $330,000- kiss that goodbye!

The NRSD school committee will have a budget hearing on Wednesday to increase the $380,000 figure for Templeton to $575,000 an increase of 9.21% to Templeton's portion of the NRSD  budget.

Anyone else see a problem here? The Town can only raise taxes by 2.5% each year. The NRSD traditionally, over many years, - look in the annual reports -has increased Templeton's assessment by 6%, 7% 8%, 9% or more. EVERY YEAR!

Give credit where credit is due. Chairman John Caplis stated:
"This is not good news at all." "Services will have to be cut."

In other news -
the Templeton BOS held an executive session last night. The interim Town Administrator's contract has been extended until June 30, 2017 with an increase in pay.

  1. Education is the best value for the buck. Schooling is a total waste of money and time. Which one do you think we have?

    1. Like I have said, there had better be a "Plan B". Somehow our selectmen do not get the fact that we are not rolling in dough. Carter does know that, but it did not stop him from getting a raise in pay when his time as TA was extended. One more time, spending money that we do not have. How deep will the hole be by the time he is gone ?

  2. I have an idea. Can someone please tell the NRSD the answer to the increase is NO, you get 2 1/2 period.

It's time the school started living on a realistic budget. I'm sick and tired of the Town being punished for mismanaged funds at the school.

  3. Refund Refund read all about it call and ask Driscoll general manager of TMLWP

Refund in 2017 from only one is 500,000.00
reduction for power costs for last 2 years at 100,000.00 each year.
I see it as at least 700,000.00 for the year of 2017.
As we pay off the loans for the nuke plants we get the power at a cheaper rate.
Sorry i meant to write they get it at a cheaper rate.
Don't think they will share it with the leadership we have now.

  4. bob m: thats what I've said for years. the school budget runs this town. the board is mostly retired teachers that think that money educates. teachers do. if they spent more time teaching and less time brain washing them we would all be better of. it is not the only budget in town !!! driscoll will d o nothing to help the town. we know that from past experience. if it wasn't for have 3 butt kissers on the board, he'd be gone. until we get rid of them, we are screwed !!!

  5. Here's a great article on what we are getting for our money with public schools.

227 Autonomous Technology: The Underground History of Amercian Education by John Taylor Gatto from archive.org

    Autonomous Technology

The simple truth is there is no way to control this massive corporate/school thing from
the human end. It has to be broken up. It has become a piece of autonomous technology.
Its leadership is bankrupt in ideas. Merchants are merchants, not moral leaders or
political ones. It surely is a sign of retrogression, not advance, that we have forgotten
what the world's peoples knew forever. A merchant has the same right to offer his
opinion as I do, but it makes little sense for people who buy and sell soap and cigarettes
to tell you how to raise your kid or what to believe in. No more sense than it does for a
pedagogue to do the same. How would a huckster who pushes toothpaste, a joker who
vends cigarettes, or a video dream peddler know anything about leading nations or raising
children correctly? Are these to be the Washingtons, Jacksons, and Lincolns of the
    twenty-first century?

The timeless core of Western tradition, which only the cowardly and corrupt would wish
to surrender, shows that we can't grow into the truth of our own nature without local
traditions and values at the center of things. We do not do well as human beings in those
abstract associations for material advantage favored by merchants called networks, or in
megalithic systems, whether governmental, institutional, or corporate. In his book An
Open Life, Joseph Campbell put his finger on the heart of the matter:

[It is] an Oriental model. One of the typical things of the Orient is that any criticism
disqualifies you for the guru's instruction. Well in heaven's name, is that appropriate for
a Western mind? It's simply a transferring of your submission to a childhood father onto
a father for your adulthood. Which means you're not growing up.... The thing about the
guru in the West is that he represents an alien principle, namely, that you don't follow
your own path, you follow a given path. And that's totally contrary to the Western spirit!
Our spirituality is of the individual quest, individual realization — authenticity in your
own life out of your own center, (emphasis added)

Mario Savio, the 1960s campus radical, stood once on the steps of Sproul Hall, Berkeley,
    and screamed:

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick
at heart that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put
your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus
and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who own it that
unless you are free the machine will be prevented from working at all.
