Well over 50 yrs ago I knew a lady who would not buy Christmas gifts if they were made in China .
Did y'all see Diane Sawyer's special report? They removed ALL items from a typical, middle class family's home that were not made in the USA .
There was hardly anything left besides the kitchen sink. Literally. During the special they showed truckloads of items - USA made - being brought in to replace everything and talked about how to find these items and the difference in price etc..
It was interesting that Diane said if every American spent just $64 more than normal on USA made items this year, it would create something like
200,000 new jobs!

FOR EXAMPLE THE "OUR FAMILY" BRAND OF THE MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS RIGHT ON THE CAN 'FROM CHINA '
I WAS SHOCKED SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS I BOUGHT THE LIBERTY GOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE SINCE IT'S FROM CALIF
Are we Americans as dumb as we appear --- or --- is it that we just do not think? The Chinese, knowingly and intentionally, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in American markets. 70% of Americans,.. believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended.Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges? You Can..DO IT YOURSELF, AMERICA !!
Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China ' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong), simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.
Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some American farmer. Easter is just an example. The point is do not wait for the government to act. Just go ahead and assume control on your own.
THINK ABOUT THIS: If 200 million Americans each refuse to buy just $20 of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor...fast!!
Most of the people who have been reading about this matter are planning on implementing this on Aug. 1st and continue it until Sept. 1st. That is only one month of trading losses, but it will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their American exports. Then they might have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it.
Remember, August 1st to Sept. 1st !START NOW.
Send this to everybody you know. Let's show them that we are Americans and NOBODY can take us for granted.
If we can't live without cheap Chinese goods for one month out of our lives,WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET!

Ok Maggie Pauly & I are going try this. a few years ago I read a book by a woman that went a year with only buying Made in the USA, can't remember the name of it. Pauly wants me to ask does anyone know where those three new desks in the selectmens office were made? He says you can tell from the nyofites that come out of them, (hee-hee-hee as he says)

The Citizens4Templeton are going to have a table at the Crafts Fair. We plan to have things on the table that we purchase from local businesses. When you buy from many of the big box stores, the people that produce things are often working under very bad conditions, recieving wages that are not what you could call a living wage. What you think you gain from doing business with these people, is not a gain at all. As Ms.Balins has noted, in the post she was kind enough to send Pauly. I can relate to the plant business. When you buy from the big box stores, they get plants from huge growers. The only way a grower can compete, is to grow what they don't. To grow a better quality product, and to depend on a following that does business with you year after year. At best, with the increase in oil prices, seeds, dirt, fertalizer, potts, and everything you can think of it is almost a loosing battle. The thing that makes it worth while is the relationships you have with the people who support you year after year. The walmarts, and home depots have put alot of good businesses out of business. What little you save, more often than not you will blow the savings before you get out the door. Those big stores have it all figured out. Anyway this is something I know I will try to do. Lets give it a shot. Gee, you never know what you will find on Paulys Blog! Bev.
ReplyDeletegood luck with getting car parts made here ! Can see a problem to do made in usa only, even new car parts are mexico, canada and china korea japan and the like where do we start, profits are in the forien parts and don't get mfg here anymore! just the facts!
ReplyDeleteMaybe can't get car parts made in USA but there are many other items that you can. Every little bit helps the economy. I see the glass as being half full!
DeleteLast Christmas, we bought all of our Christmas gifts at the Harvest Fest at Red Apple Farm in Nov and at local antique shops during the Country Roads Christmas event. Our friends and family loved everything. It makes you feel good to support local businesses. Recently, I went to a Christmas Tree Shop. And I was shocked at how everything was from China. Even though the CTS is a local MA business, everything they sell is from China. I got pretty irritated and ended up not buying anything. Next door there was a store that sold crafts made by regional artisans. I bought stuff in that store and felt much better. Once you're aware of how much actually comes from China, it puts a chill down your spine. Its hard to buy EVERYTHING not from China (like auto parts) but if you have the option of two items and one isn't from China, it will help to choose the one made in the USA. Its shameful that the Olympic uniforms for Team USA was made in China. Its up to us to change this trend and not wait for the govt. to lead by example. We have to lead with our wallets.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, things were made in Japan. Then China took over. Things may change again, the Chinese are demanding more money when they work. They now want cars, better living quarters, you know all the stuff every American has,{or had}. Bart told me a plastic company lost a big contract for plastic bags. They could not make a bag cheap enough for Walmart. The cost of transportation is also makin a difference. My friend Luis works for Georgia Pacific in Leominster. Georgia Pacific left California because they could not compete with China. It costs China too much to ship thing to the east coast. Georgia Pacific makes plastic knives, spoons and forks. Luis repairs these huge robots they use. Some cost over a million dollars, and they are made in Germany. So when your plastic bag falls apart, and everything ends up on the floor you will know why. Walmart is not always the cheapest. I do not like doing business with them. I think you loose more than you gain, but this is just my opinion. Bev.
DeleteI have to agree with you Bev in regards to Walmart. I watched a documentary on the effect Walmart has on communities and try to avoid shopping there at all costs. If I can't spend a little extra to shop elsewhere I try to go without. I would much rather go with the Mom & Pop shop but there aren't to many around anymore thanks to stores like Walmart. I am going to meet Maggie's challenge; I'm sure it will be enlightening as well as a help to the good old USA!
DeleteI'm glad to see this post. I've bought only Made in USA clothing for many years. When I go to the grocery store, I look where things are produced. If America can't feed itself, after being the breadbasket to the world, we're in trouble. If it is not made in USA, maybe we don't need it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I go to the grocery store and I can't find vegetables, fruit or fish that is from America, I speak to the department head. And I tell him I won't buy his asparagus, his yellow peppers, his salmon etc unless he gets them from the USA. He usually thinks I'm a crackpot, because most people don't look where produce is from.

When people tell me they can't buy stuff made in America, I tell them everything I'm wearing is made in America.
American business isn't stupid. They give us what we want. Right now, corporate thinking is we Americans want the cheapest products we can get. Myself, I like the feel of Wigwam socks. Maybe everybody would like Wigwam socks if they tried them and realized they lasted more than a few wearings.
Everybody here can find products made in USA. It's a choice to buy products made by folks who live, work and pay taxes in our country. It's OK because the government does not mandate that we buy products from America. We're still a free market economy if we prefer to buy American.
Alas, something we can all agree on!
