TEMPLETON — The Templeton Fire Department and firefighters from four other towns battled a blaze early Wednesday morning that destroyed a house and sent one Templeton firefighter to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.

“He’s doing great now. He’s home and feeling good,” stated Templeton Fire Chief Raymond LaPorte. He was back to work in no time as well.

According to Mr. LaPorte, the weather played a large part in how the men were feeling battling the fire. Because it was hot and humid, the crews were already hindered by the heat, but adding in the flames from the fire and “it’s not a good situation.”

Before crews arrived to the scene at 235 Otter River Road, the one resident who was present had managed to escape uninjured from the fire that completely destroyed the single-family home.

When the men did arrive, the fire was fully involved and according to Mr. LaPorte. Flames that spread to the trees behind the house were extinguished quickly.

Crews from Templeton, Winchendon, Gardner, Barre and Hubbardston battled the flames from 1:19 a.m. until about 6 a.m. and then continued with an extensive overhaul of the home, putting out any hot spots that remained.

The Templeton Community Emergency Response Team was also present, providing the firefighters with water and chairs.

“It was a large fire and the men were suffering from the heat, but they still managed to put it out as quickly as possible,” expressed Mr. LaPorte.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Mr. LaPorte said that it doesn’t look suspicious but he can’t say definitively until reports come back.
