Winter Storm Warning
Snow will become heavy during the morning commute, falling at rates of 1” to 2” per hour, and at times nearing 3” per hour. Winds will gust 25 – 35 mph in central MA, and 35 – 50 mph along the coast and in eastern MA. These winds, coupled with the snowfall rate, may result in poor visibility at times.
Snow will continue to fall through the day, transitioning to periods of rain and freezing rain in the southeast, Cape and Islands late morning into the afternoon, but transitioning back to all snow before winding down tonight. Precipitation will remain all snow in areas north of the Turnpike. Generally, an average of 6” to 10” of snow is expected in southeastern Massachusetts and south of the Turnpike, and an average of 12” is expected across the rest of the state, with the potential for up to 14” in some areas. In the areas that receive freezing rain and/or rain, a small amount of ice accretion is expected, but will not be significant enough to cause downed limbs, trees or wires.
Temperatures will fall drastically on tonight, leaving the potential for flash freezing across southeastern MA, Cape and Islands. Wind chills values tonight into Tuesday will be greater than -24 in portions of western MA, between -24 and -15 in central, eastern and southeastern MA, -14 to -6 on the Cape, and -5 to 5 on the outer Cape and Islands.
