WINCHENDON - The owners of the Lucky Dragon Chinese Restaurant aren’t
sure if they’ll rebuild after a fire destroyed the business late
Sunday.
The popular restaurant on Baldwinville Road (Route 202) was gutted by a fire that was reported about 11:15 p.m.
“Police arrived on the scene and reported there was heavy fire in the rear of the building,” Deputy Fire Chief Ricci Ruschioni said, adding that the fire appears to be accidental. The building is a loss, he said.
Firefighters started attacking the fire from outside and, once inside, they found it had gotten into the attic and required extensive labor to reach. Firefighters spent hours pulling down ceilings and searching for fire, the deputy said.
“We ended up transmitting a third alarm for manpower,” Deputy Chief Ruschioni said.
Firefighters from Gardner, Ashburnham, Templeton, Phillipston and Royalston were at the scene.
Assessor records lists the owner of the building as Chau Thai. Customers of the restaurant know the owners as Jack and Judy. On Facebook Monday morning, the couple said the restaurant would be closed “until further notice.”
They also wrote: “Thank you everyone for all your wishes and prayers. It means the world to us. We ask that you please don’t come to the restaurant or on the property to stop and take pictures as it hinders the job of the fire department and various agencies from working efficiently. Thank you so much. Jack and Judy.”
The owners were still stunned Monday morning as a crew prepared to board up the building. In a brief discussion with a reporter, they said they were unsure whether they would rebuild and said they would let people know of their plans once they can come to terms with what’s happened.
Deputy Chief Ruschioni echoed sentiments that the restaurant was
popular. He said the owners are a part of the small community. He said
they brought plates of goodies to the fire station at Christmas.
The state fire marshal’s office is assisting in the investigation, Deputy Chief Ruschioni said. He said the fire doesn’t seem to be suspicious and appears to have started just outside the building in a small shed-type structure. The building had been modified over the years, the deputy said.
He said it appears to be an accidental fire.
The building is a loss, he said.
