Amid coronavirus pandemic, a Massachusetts Stop & Shop location slated to close reopens as online-only store
Earlier this week Stop & Shop’s Brockton location closed. A day later it reopened as an online-only store.
“I
am excited this location will give people virtual shopping
opportunities, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Brockton
Mayor Robert F. Sullivan in a statement.
Stop & Shop has seen a surge in demand for online grocery orders using their service, Peapod, during the pandemic.
Before
the outbreak, only about 3% or 4% of grocery spending in the U.S. was
online, according to research by consulting firm Bain & Company. In
recent weeks that number is now closer to 15% of total grocery sales, CNBC reported.
The
new Stop & Shop facility is equipped to process hundreds of online
orders each week, and has created more than 50 new permanent jobs.
Customers
will be able to schedule pickup at the center or schedule home
deliveries between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm every day, Stop & Shop said.
