TEMPLETON  Holy Cross Parish in East Templeton will host a Family Festival this weekend for parish members and the community.

“We want everyone to get a sense of community from this event. It’s just a friendly get-together,” said organizer Gail Noel.

The annual festival, which has been occurring for over 30 years, is meant to be a fundraiser to raise money for the church’s maintenance costs as well as other funds.

The day will include food, games, raffles and traditional family fun.

The main attraction of the day will be Tom’s Famous Chicken, where Tom Royer will barbecue chickens that will serve as part of a whole meal consisting of baked potatoes, corn on the cob and coleslaw that people can buy. It will cost $6 for a quarter chicken and $9 for a half chicken. There will also be hot dogs for those who aren’t fans of chicken.
According to Ms. Noel, past festivals have seen about 1,000 chickens sold to attendees. The meals will be served from noon to 2 p.m.

“Everyone knows Tom’s cooking,” said Ms. Noel.

A DJ will be present to play music throughout the day and there will be several activities for children and their parents.

Games for the kids include a moon walk, coin scramble and a ring toss. An intense game of tug-of-war will be played for anyone willing to join in.

A 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction will be for those who’d like to take the chance to win a prize. Vendors selling homemade items such as jelly will be available for attendees as well.

Ms. Noel said that everyone chips in to help out with the event and that it gives people a chance to socialize instead of just seeing members of the church at Mass.

“It was created so families from the parish and community could come together at a social event,” expressed Ms. Noel.

The day kicks off on Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Otter River Sportsman’s Club and will continue until 3 p.m.
