WORCESTER - If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere ...
and Worcester travelers can make it to New York and beyond on JetBlue
beginning May 3, the airline’s CEO and President Robin Hayes announced
Thursday at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce breakfast
meeting.
“Finally, it’s official; it’s what we’ve been waiting for,” said Worcester County Sheriff Lewis G. Evangelidis, the chairman of the Massachusetts Port Authority. “I think it is a big step in making the airport successful and connecting us to the world.”
And to sweeten the deal, those who book Thursday or Friday can get a one-way ticket for $29.
JetBlue announced in February that it was adding daily flights connecting Worcester Regional Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport following the completion of a Category III landing system that would allow planes to land in Worcester in all kinds of weather.
Worcester Regional Airport Director Andy Davis said at the meeting Thursday that construction has been completed and the Federal Aviation Administration is testing the system, a process that will take several weeks.
Mr. Hayes visited the chamber’s Breakfast Club meeting Thursday
to discuss the airline’s growth, particularly in Boston and Worcester.
He said the airline was driven by a mission of “bringing
humanity back to airlines,” and was focused on five values - safety, caring, passion, integrity and fun.
The company, which now employs 21,000 and is based in New York, has grown to serve 101 cities since its creation in the late 1990s, Mr. Hayes said. It began flying out of JFK in 2000.
Worcester is its 79th city. JetBlue currently has flights connecting Worcester with Orlando International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Those flights are 10 to 20 percent cheaper than flying to Florida from Logan International Airport, Hayes said.
Beginning May 3, JFK will be another destination, Mr. Hayes announced to applause from the crowded hall at St. Spyridon Cathedral.
The flight will leave Worcester at 6:04 a.m. and arrive at JFK at 7 a.m. This was planned so that passengers could connect with flights to all over the world.
“You have to get up early,” Mr. Hayes said. “This flight is aimed to be a gateway to the world.”
Or if passengers want to spend a day in New York (a long day, Mr. Hayes noted), the flight returns to Worcester at night - departing JFK at 10:45 p.m. and arriving in Worcester at 11:50 p.m.
The regular fares will cost $39, depending on time of booking, according to a JetBlue representative. The lowest walk-up fares will be $94.
Mr. Evangelidis said the announcement was indicative of ongoing momentum of Worcester and the airport.
“This is connecting us to the world, and connecting the world to Worcester,” Mr. Evangelidis said, urging customers to take advantage of the service. He said that several additional airlines would be watching the flights’ success to determine if they wanted to expand to Worcester.
“This is really a great day for us,” Mr. Evangelidis continued. “I think it bodes well for the future.”
