Haley Brooks set for key role in town

TEMPLETON — Diane Haley Brooks has been named vice chairman of the Board of Selectmen, following the resignation of former Board of Selectmen Vice Chairman Cameron Fortes, who left to pursue a job opportunity in Boston.

Fortes officially resigned from the board on Dec. 1, after taking a job opportunity in finance in Boston. Fortes’ term was supposed to run until 2020, and the board does not plan to hold any special election to fill the vacancy.

“On my part as a young guy at 25 and being in finance, there is a lucrative opportunity for me and it only made sense to move to Boston to be closer to that opportunity,” Fortes said. “Though I won’t be acting (in a) selectmen’s capacity I still will be there for the community to help these things I was a part of.”

Current Board of Selectmen Chairman John Caplis also announced that he will not run for another term as selectman.

“I won’t leave the people high and dry. I wish my health was better,” Caplis said. “Right now, I am having a difficult time. I am a triple Purple Heart recipient that has been shot and blown up, and people don’t realize that. It takes a toll on your body physically and mentally.”

Caplis said he will serve until the next election, in 2019. Until then, it will be Caplis, Haley Brooks, Julie Richard and Doug Morrison as selectmen

In the next election, Caplis’ spot will be open, Fortes’ spot will be open, and the position held by Morrison will also be up for election, though Morrison is expected to run again. The positions of Haley Brooks and Richard are staggered, so they would be still in office and not up for re-election yet in 2020.
