GARDNER - Crews cleaned more than 200 gallons of spilled gasoline
from the ground and storm drains after a driver hit a pump at a Timpany
Boulevard gas station Saturday night.
Gardner Fire Department Lt. Steven Roy reported that crews were dispatched around 9 p.m. Saturday to the Shell service station.
Lt. Roy said a driver had gone into the convenience store at the station and reported hitting one of the gas pumps but said there was no damage. Shortly after the driver left, the clerk reported gasoline flowing.
The fuel entered storm drains, prompting monitoring of nearby houses. Lt. Roy said that one house reported an odor of fuel, but nobody was treated for any injuries.
A cleanup company vacuumed approximately 298 gallons of liquid from containment tubes and storm drains, which included more than 200 gallons of fuel, according to an estimate by Lt. Roy.
Fire Department personnel, which included mutual aid from Hubbardston and Westminster, cleared the scene at approximately 5 a.m. Sunday, Lt. Roy said.
