Wages, Benefits, extras,
On a previous post concerning a labor contract and the extras included in the contract got me wondering about another relevant topic. In my opinion, there should be some concern on the part of taxpayers for the non-union Town employees with regards to clothing allowances enjoyed by union members. The reason or one of them is talk of a dress code of sorts discussed at recent BOS meetings held at Town Hall. If one considers the separate but equal decisions on some issues by the courts, one could suppose that if a dress code is imposed on Town employees, they may ask and they could be granted a clothing allowance on taxpayer dime. Again, equal protection under the law, so if union employees get shirt, shoe and coat allowance then the office types should as well. Perhaps a good way to avoid this is when the next union contract comes up and Dave Smart says it is in 2016, do away with all clothing allowance and give an across the board pay increase to all employees and on equal footing. Rather than giving a cost of living increase on a percentage base, give everyone a 25 cent per hour increase or 50 cent or whatever figure but not a percentage. Why should someone who makes 55 thousand per year get a larger increase than some one making 30 thousand per year, and that is what percentage based increases do. Last time I looked, a gallon of milk or a gallon of gasoline costs the same no matter how much one makes per year. This might be be a good thing for the finance committee to look into and make recommendations to the Town.

  1. David is doing his job. The job of the Union Steward. He is not responsible for all that was decided before he took office. This was decided before he took the job, and nothing would change if another person was in that position. David runs the blog, and I think he does a dam good job. People do not like the personal attacks that have taken place in the past,on the blog, so we have tried to clean things up a bit. I get that you do not like Dave. That is your right. I like you both, so please stick to the facts. That is what people want to see. Bev. ,

  2. Don't know what to tell you Bev, I do not get a personal attack when just stating fact and referencing information that Dave has already posted, as in he is the new union steward and he listed all the extras in the contract as in boot allowance, eye pro allowance, coat allowance and shirts, never said it was on him alone, union usually asks for things and in this case selectmen approve it. all I was pointing out was non union people may be able to ask for same things. Never said I don't like Dave either.
