School Cost Comparisons

 School Cost Comparisons
Why not compare our cost per square foot to surrounding communities like Athol Royalston ($368) and Ashburnham Westminster ($288)? What makes Templeton's project so special at $513 per square foot?

Diane Haley Brooks, Selectwoman

Many people have asked about comparing costs to other communities at cost per gross sq ft and that it was high. This must be compared as apples to apples using accurate numbers. I had requested this information and now I am posting it here for you to review. If you have questions, please ask and if I don't know the answers I am going to get you the correct information.

Please be informed when you are voting. This is a very important vote for our community.

  1. Apples to Apples-

    How about these apples?

Ashburnham Westminster $288 per square foot 520 students

Athol Royalston $368 per square foot 545 students SMMA as OPM

The chart provided by Selectwoman Haley Brooks was provided by SMMA acting as our designer. SMMA was the OPM for Athol's new elementary school.

Could Athol's project been conveniently omitted from the chart provided to Selectwoman Haley Brooks by SMMA? Why would that be?

Templeton's proposed Elementary school will be built to accommodate 35 more students than Athol's elementary school. Yet our cost per square foot is $145 more than Athol's ( $368 per square foot). What is it about these 35 students (for a total of 580 students) that increases our cost per square foot to $513.

    How about them apples?

  3. Things that make this project look poor or the worst option are shielded from the reports.
This is the one that should be a focus at town meeting.
I would like to know how many towns have been pushed to commit when the options run out for the place to put it.
If nothing else the state should have extra money for the intrest on the money we didn't take from them. How about the 20,000.00 we paid the commonwealth. The school to be a forced to go anywhere should be a problem for us all.
There is plenty of land on Baldwinville road now available that wasn't when this thing started out.
If the state put this off this long why not for another year as we see it fit for the expansion of Templeton school system.
Just think how it will have a larger school choice population only getting off at the RTE.2 ramps.
When it fills up we can expand on the rest of the land left over after the play fields and track basketball tennis all the things we won't ever see in the TC site! EVER. Unless we do a dirty deed to people in town that live next door.
As we get into the winter and try to plow the way we were told we could in TC a big surprise will no doubt hit home.
Will the method to open the schools need to change? How will the snow piled up on side walks impact safe dropoffs?
The way the forum showed the snow piles was at best a joke.
Will the parking areas be the new snow pile areas and leave the people to fend for themselves to park.
Do any of us think the project is a totally good idea?
If you went to build a home on a piece of land smaller than needed do you think the bank would let you do it?
Do you think the town should put it on a less than needed size?
This plan doesn't serve anyone anygood but the people doing the building of it.
    It's all about the money!
