From Bev

I want everyone to think of another way this can be handled. On the Thursday, that we had the Primary Voting at the Middle School, I had a birds eye view of the road, and the parking lot. I spent the day acrossed the street, campaigning. What should have gone smoothly, ended up being anything but. Things went well until two thirty in the afternoon. All of a sudden we had busses pulling in to pick up kids, and a line of cars parked along side the driveway, going toward the back of the school. I found out these mothers were there to pick up their kids. I can't blame them, as one lady told me she had sex offenders in her neighborhood, and she wasn't going to let her kids walk home,{or from the bus} So now, we had two games going on, parking lot pretty full of cars, and a big bus. Cars, with people trying to vote could not get in the yard. The bus did not have to stay parked there,my opinion of course. At one point I did call the dispatcher and ask for the cruiser. Things were getting crazy! I guess I got what I wanted, as I saw the chief ride by on his way home? At that minute things had calmed down, but things did not stay calm for long! The traffic was flying by, at one point I heard skreeching breaks, as a man and two little kids tried to cross the road, into the big parking lot , on foot. No flashing lights , on the sign saying 20mph. Again the cars were backed up, could not get in to vote, or when they got in the lot there was no place to park. I called dispatch again, and pretty much said, get someone out here. Out of the school came a officer. He stayed down at the end of the driveway and told people there way no place to park{no kidding} All I can say is what are we going to do if this happens during a general election? This is something we have to think about now. November is not to far away. I wonder how many people did not get to vote. One or more is too many! Bev

  1. Bev. Very good observation and action, but, this has been going on for many years...since the polls were at the school. The school cannot close or cancel activities for voting purposes. With unexpected weather, etc, the 180 days required is hard to meet anyway. Maybe it is time to change the polling site, or divide the precincts if the state will allow it. My understanding is that it is not a town decision. And, don't forget costs (including police) for every election, recall, or, town meeting come out of the taxpayers money. Ask the Town Clerk how much it costs. It seems there is no easy solution to every problem this town has.

  2. They have another gym on the opposite side of the school AWAY from everything else, ANOTHER possibly simple and common sense solution that gets overlooked in this town.

    1. Thanks for the feedback. I know for sure, we cannot go through a general election like this. The problem was not with the gym, they were as happy as a clam at high tide. I was with the parking. Just no place to go! It is no secrect that the school does not want the election to be held there. Going back to the fire station in TC would work, to a degree. Templeton Fish and Game Club has room, parking is very good, a little out of the way. Give it some thought, if we stay at the school, there needs to be a great improvement. I do not want anyone to get hurt, or leave out of frustration. Bev

  3. Once the new senior center is open it could be a good place.

    1. Good idea. And if the town offices move to ET school, that could be another place.

  4. THE GYM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHOOL IS THE PROBLEM, SWITCHING TO THE OTHER GYM WOULD SEND ALL VOTERS TO THE FAR END AWAY FROM THE TEACHER/PICK-UP/SPORT FIELD/VOTER SECTION.

  5. The High School gym is a different address from the middle school, therefore, the issue must go to the state election board before anything could be done. The state level governs everything concerning elections. It's not likely anything will change before November (my opinion only). Another underlying problem at Narragansett is the increase in cars driven by students. Take a look at all 5 parking lots and you will see they are all nearly full on a daily basis. All good ideas though.

    1. LOOKS LIKE THIS IS GOING TO BE ANOTHER MESS, IF SOMEONE CAN'T THINK OF SOMETHING FAST. FOR ONE THING, WE NEED TWO POLICE OFFICERS THERE. ONE DOWN THE END OF THE DRIVEWAY,[WITH A RADIO] AND ONE AT THE ROAD.IT DOES NO GOOD TO HAVE A LINE OF CARS DRIVE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE PARKING LOT, TO FIND THERE IS NO PLACE TO PARK] ESPECIALLY AT SCHOOL CLOSING, AND WHEN IT GETS BUSY FROM 4:00 ON. I HOPE THERE ARE NO GAMES THAT DAY, IT MAKES A DIFFICULT TIME HARDER. BEV.

  6. Bev,
Usually for an election like the one in November, the school tries to hold any games at the opponents locations. Also, the staff is encouraged to park in the other parking lots so the voters can get in and out. There SHOULD be police officers assigned to help with traffic. Ask our Town clerk if she has asked for a police detail.

    1. I have heard several people say that they triped on the floor covering. If someone should fall and get hurt, there will be a law suit involved. To change the subject, I have a printer, copyier, scanner, in working condition, that I would like to give away. Call 978-939-8811 if interested.
