Designed to handle a larger number of daily customers, the new registry will open on Research Drive on Monday, Oct. 16.
"We were looking for a location where we can offer a wide variety of services and this particular space offers us over 9,000 square feet whereas our current location is only 6,000," said Mary Tibma, deputy registrar for external services. "It gives us a great ability to meet the needs of customers. It's much more appropriate."
In addition to the extra space, the new registry will offer expanded parking with 120 spaces and utilize 10 upgraded work stations with another two work stations that will handle registration services only.
Tibma added that the location was chosen due to its accessibility to customers. Located just before the city border with Sterling, the new registry will be 1.4 miles from Route 190.
"One of the key things we look for is accessibility. We want this to be easy not just for people of Leominster, but the surrounding towns as well," she said.
The new registry will be the first building to be constructed and opened in the Southgate Business Park. The 60-acre parcel, which was designed for 17 lots, was purchased by J.Whitney Development in 2003 and the company also has plans to construct another 7,000-square-foot building across the adjoining parking lot from the registry.
Depending on the amount of customer traffic the registry experiences after being opened, Tibma said additional staff could be hired.
"I think we're looking for a way to better serve the public and this is going to be a beautiful new facility for us," she said. "We want to make sure the experience is a positive one for our customers."
The last day of registry operations at the current Erdman Way offices will be Friday.
