Diane Haley-Brooks wins coveted Board of Selectmen seat

TEMPLETON — On a rainy Tuesday night election, Diane Haley-Brooks swept the precincts, winning the coveted fifth Board of Selectmen seat.
“I’m excited,” she said after the results were read. “I’m looking forward to getting to work.”
Ms. Brooks defeated former selectmen Robert Mitchell for the seat and her term will last until May when the seat is once again up for re-election.
Wasting no time getting to work, she and her fellow selectmen will officially meet with a potential interim town coordinator candidate tonight.
According to officials, the rain and off-timing of the election kept crowds away from the polls. Town Clerk Carol Harris said roughly 600 of the 5,044 registered Templeton voters made a visit to the high school gymnasium. However, despite the low turnout, Ms. Brooks managed over 100 votes in each precinct.
A Templeton native, Ms. Brooks served on the Templeton 250th Anniversary Committee, and is heavily involved in local events and the school district, campaigning for the Proposition 2 1/2 Override last year. She said that her involvement in the community, passion for helping people, and open-mindedness made her right for the job.
She will join her fellow selectmen on Jan. 27 for her first meeting.
Tuesday’s ballot also featured a non-binding referendum asking voters whether they supported the Board of Selectmen taking control of the town’s water department. Resident’s answered with a resounding no, instead supporting Templeton Municipal Light and Water’s continued management of the department.

This is the chance for Ms. Haley-Brooks to prove me wrong, and do her job to help the town and the schools get through a very difficult time. The people have put a great deal of trust in the people they have picked to run the town. By being elected to a position of selectman, there is little room for picking sides, because the town's business has only one side. There is no doubt about the fact that there needs to be some very big changes made in the way the Town of Templeton does business. I do not care who sits in a selectman's seat, the only way things will improve for everyone in our town, is when people learn to live together, and share what little we have. I do wish Diane the best, as this will be one of the most difficult job she will ever do. Bev.
DeleteCongratulations Diane and good luck at the helm. Many thanks to Bob Mitchell for taking the time to run for this sometimes rocky position. I hope it wasn't the campaign song that made the negative difference.
