Hometeam softball: Narragansett's Kirby
state’s coach of the year
Jay Gearan Softball
Only hours before his team romped to an
18-0 win over Littleton on Monday, Narragansett Regional softball coach Mickey
Kirby received some very good news in an email.
Kirby was named the 2013 MIAA Softball
Coach of the Year. Selected from among nominations sent to a screening
committee of MIAA Coaching Education Instructors, Kirby was given the award
based on his “excellence of character, impact upon students and community and
coaching quality.”
Kirby will officially receive his award
at a recognition banquet on May 29 at the MIAA office in Franklin. In addition,
Kirby will be the Mass. nominee to the National Federation of High Schools for
Coach of the Year Honors.
Now in his ninth season, Kirby’s
coaching record is 131-43, and his Warriors have captured three straight Mid-
Wach C titles.
“I’ve had some great players and
excellent assistant coaches in Rick Pervier, Lauren Caouette and
my daughter, Lauren,” Kirby said.
With eight seniors in the lineup,
Kirby’s Warriors are 3-1 and, no doubt, headed for another postseason
appearance.
The next victory for the Narragansett
seniors will be their 60th. They have only 11 losses Today the Warriors step up
a division and travel to Leominster.
“We’re also playing Westboro and
Nashoba this year because it’s a good way to get ready for the districts,” said
Kirby, whose team went 19-2 last year and lost to Notre Dame Academy in the
first round.
“Everyone is really positive this
year,” said senior pitcher Danielle LeBlanc, who struck out 111 batters
in 104 innings last season. “We come out fired up for each practice and game.”
Added her twin sister Megan, who
plays centerfield, “I think a lot of our positive feeling comes from the fact
that we didn’t lose any player to graduation last year.”
Another strong senior is first baseman Summer
Moulton, who is hitting .545 and added, “Our slogan this year is ‘Finish
It.’ ”
The Warriors won the Central Mass.
Division 2 title in 2008. “Since then, we’ve come close and we want to step it
up and finish it this year,” Kirby said.
Talented senior leadoff hitter Kimmie
Morris is batting .500 and praised by Kirby as “one of the best all-around
players I’ve ever coached.”

Happy
25th Anniversary as well!
This is a huge honor for Mr. Kirby. I am very proud of all of these girls. Back in the day, {way back} the girls teams got very little recognition, for anything they did. That has changed, thank goodness, so go out and "Finish it". The people in town are proud of you. Bev.
ReplyDeleteDo the muppets realize mr.kirby supports chris stewart.....not pauly or ms piggy???? Mr. Kirby is a stand up gentelmen who does not approve of the actions and words of the muppetts....thought that should be cleared before the muppett show starts
ReplyDeleteLove will always overpower hate.
DeleteCongratulations Coach Kirby for your years of dedication to Gansett sports and your latest award, this coming just days after the magic 25th wedding anniversary!! Many people have forgotten your years of service to the town as a Sewer Commissioner where no award was given. Good luck with the upcoming elections and your bid for Cemetery Commissioner.
ReplyDeleteThis is great news! Thanks for sharing. (All politics aside for a moment to show support for something positive)
ReplyDeleteDear Anon 12:04
ReplyDeleteI'll try to put his in terms that someone who has a disturbing obsession with muppets will understand.
This blog posting was not political in nature. It was to congratulate Mickey Kirby for an awesome accomplishment.
I saw Mickey and Leanne walking today and Mickey told me the softball team beat Leominster 7-2 today.
I hope you had a great day! It was beautiful out!
Yes Julie, I agree that this person has an obsession & seems to be very disturbed in that they can dish it out but can't take it. When someone said something to him or her for being rude in another blog they thought it was an insult. Isn't it amazing how when the shoe is on the other foot they get all riled but in this person's mind it is okay to say disrespectful things to others because they don't agree with them yet says nothing of substance. It was very nice of you to respond anyway in a kind caring manner. I tried that approach with this person & attempted to bring about reason but they came back & called me stupid. Contrary to the provoking they were trying to do, that does not bother me, it is this continuous childish name calling & rudeness to you & disrespect to all who read the blog that I think is offensive. He/she must be a very sad miserable lonely individual. The people who participate & read Pauly's watch deserve better, as do you. Thus, due to their bad behavior, I have chosen not to respond to this cantankerous person's comments because they have a mindset that will not respond to any reasonable dialogue. I do hope they can get help & converse in a more adult manner in the future if they continue to post here. So, if they have some hard solid facts of anything that can shed light on these serious topics, I am sure we would all love to hear it but until then the nasty empty rhetoric does nothing for their cause. Thanks for all you do for this community Mrs. Farrell. Now as you say, this blog spot was to honor a coach regardless of his political views. I say Congrats to him & his team. Wonderful stats.
