Shrewsbury superintendent says schools should reject out-of-town students
SHREWSBURY — The Shrewsbury public schools should not accept non-resident students through the state's school choice program in the fall, Superintendent Joseph Sawyer told the School Committee Wednesday night at Shrewsbury Town Hall.
The board will vote on March 25.
Mr. Sawyer said Shrewsbury has not accepted school choice students since about 20 students "moved through" at a time when the school board sought additional revenue streams.
School districts receive tuition of $5,000 per student, in the form of state Chapter 70 education aid, diverted from the student's home district, as well as special education money if applicable, Mr. Sawyer said.
